Why Madeira is so good for whale watching
Madeira is the top of a huge volcano that rises from the deep Atlantic. Under the water the slopes drop away steeply, so the deep, food-rich water where whales and dolphins feed is close to the shore. More than 20 species of whales and dolphins have been recorded around the island. Some live here all year, others pass through on their migrations.
What you can see, and when
| Species | When | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bottlenose dolphin | All year (more often March–October) | Curious, often comes close to the boat |
| Short-finned pilot whale | All year (mostly November–April) | Dark, rounded head; travels in family groups |
| Atlantic spotted dolphin | Mostly March–November | Fast and playful, covered in pale spots |
| Common dolphin | Mostly December–May | Large, energetic groups |
| Sperm whale | All year (mainly March–September) | The largest toothed whale; dives deep for a long time |
| Bryde’s whale | April–October | A large baleen whale of the warmer months |
| Fin and sei whales | Irregular, mostly spring and summer | Among the largest animals on Earth; a sighting is a bonus |

When is the best time to go?
Whale watching in Madeira works all year. Dolphins are around in every month, so even a winter trip has good chances. From April to October more species are present, including Bryde’s whales and Atlantic spotted dolphins, and the sea is usually calmer. That is the best period if you hope to see whales as well as dolphins.
Catamaran or speedboat?
- Catamaran: bigger and more stable, with toilets, shade and often a bar on board. Usually the cheaper option, and good for families with small children.
- Speedboat: smaller groups, faster and closer to the water, so it feels more adventurous. Operators usually set a minimum age for children.
On a speedboat you sit close to the water, often just a few metres from the dolphins.
Most trips last 2 to 3 hours and leave from Funchal marina, about 15 minutes by car from Caniço. As an example, one Funchal catamaran trip is listed for 2026 at €40 per adult and €20 per child aged 5 to 12. Speedboat trips usually cost a little more. Many operators offer a free second trip if you don’t see any whales or dolphins, so ask about it before you book.
How to choose a responsible tour
Madeira regulates whale watching by law (Regional Legislative Decree 15/2013/M). Operators need a licence, the number of boats is limited, and boats must follow rules when they approach the animals: according to the International Whaling Commission’s summary of the regional rules, that includes a minimum distance of 50 metres and a maximum of 10 minutes per boat with each group.
- Book a licensed operator, ideally with a marine biologist or trained guide on board.
- A good boat slows down, approaches from the side and never chases or cuts in front of the animals.
- Don’t feed or touch the animals, and keep the noise down.
- Free swimming with whales and dolphins is not allowed in Madeira. Some licensed operators offer underwater viewing of certain dolphin species while you stay attached to the boat by a rope. Check the details in advance.
Tips for a great trip
- Seasickness: if you are prone to it, eat something light, stay outside in the fresh air and look at the horizon. Ask a pharmacist about seasickness medicine before the trip.
- What to bring: sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and a windproof jacket. It is cooler and windier at sea, even in summer.
- Photos: a phone works fine. Use burst mode to catch the jumps, and bring binoculars for whales further away.
- Book early in your holiday: if the sea is too rough on the day, you still have time to rebook.
Under the water: the Garajau Marine Reserve
Right next to Caniço is one of the best places in Madeira for marine life: the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve, created in 1986 to protect the sea floor. It is one of the island’s favourite diving spots. Divers come for the dusky groupers (mero), and in deeper water, below 20 metres, they can also see manta and mobula rays. Dive centres in Caniço de Baixo run trips into the reserve, and on calm days the clear water at Garajau beach is good for snorkelling.
The coast at Garajau, a few minutes from Coastal Garden.
Coastal Garden, our apartment in Caniço, is five minutes from Garajau beach and about 15 minutes from Funchal marina. You can join a morning boat trip, spend the afternoon swimming in the reserve and watch the sunset over the ocean from your own balcony. Planning more of your trip?
